Tel Aviv University is the latest scientific establishment to test UV LEDs, finding that the technology does an impressive job of killing covid. They even suggest the tech could ultimately be installed into air conditioning units, vacuum systems and water systems as well as being used portably in machines like ours. Here’s the story.
It’s official – The anti-viral power of UV LEDs is proven once more
Researchers at Tel Aviv University have revealed how efficiently, quickly, and cheaply the virus can be killed using ultraviolet light-emitting diodes. They carried out the world’s first piece of research looking into the disinfection efficiency of UV-LED irradiation at different wavelengths or frequencies on a virus in the coronavirus family. The results were published in the November 2020 issue of the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology.
UVC LED saves manpower, saves money, and keeps people safe
The study also threw the difficulties around ordinary disinfection into sharper relief than ever, revealing how disinfecting public transport, sports venues and aircraft using chemical spraying involves a lot of expensive manpower as well as putting the cleaners themselves at risk. Plus, chemicals require time to work.
UVC LED disinfection systems should eventually be able to be installed in ventilation systems and air conditioners, placed so they sterilize the air as it enters and leaves a space. The team found it was “quite simple” to kill the coronavirus using low cost, low energy, widely available LED bulbs that radiate ultraviolet light.
The researchers discovered the 265 - 285 nanometer wavelength was the most effective, taking less than half a minute to destroy more than 99.9% of the coronaviruses present. In a world where 275 nm LED light engines cost a lot less than their 254 nm Flourescent tube counterparts, it’s great news.
Don’t try this at home!
There’s a caveat around safety – please don’t just buy a bunch of 275nm LED UVC bulbs and attempt a DIY job! It’s actually very dangerous to try it yourself at home, since systems must be designed to keep people safe from direct exposure to the light.
Our UVC LED covid disinfecting machines are already out there doing a superb job
It’s great to see even more scientific proof stacking up around UVC LED virus-killing tech. It’s even better to know that more of our machines than ever are out there, helping businesses survive and keeping customers safe from the virus.
