Using UVC disinfection to combat Covid-19…
An appeal from LightingEurope
LightingEurope has appealed to EU policy makers to do more to ‘actively support and stimulate’ the use of UVC disinfection technologies like ours, to support the EU Renovation Wave Initiative and make sure the installation of UVC disinfection tech is financially supported.
As we know, UVC is already established as a highly effective way to disinfect, used since 1910 and now being harnessed once more to help fight the current pandemic. It has also been proved to inactivate all the bacteria and viruses it’s tested on, including SARS, MERS, TB, flu and the common cold, plus moulds, spores, fungi and yeasts, destroying their RNA and DNA. Recent research confirms UVC light is highly effective in inactivating the covid virus, too.
The European lighting industry leads the way with safe UVC disinfection tech, including lamps, light fixtures,
cabinets and various connected systems. These are already being used to disinfect water, air, and surfaces across industrial, commercial, medical, public and residential contexts.
UVC effectively cleans trapped and recirculated indoor air, reducing airborne infections. It disinfects drinking water in taps, coolers and things like coffee machines. It also makes swimming pools, fish ponds, aquariums and waste water safe, as well as cleaning a multitude of surfaces in public places like trains, aircraft, buses,
food manufacturing sites, hotels and hospitals. The safety of all this is assured when disinfection tech is manufactured, installed and used according to the Global Lighting Association’s safety guidelines. They’ve also provided UVC light safety guidelines covering essentials like presence detection and access controls,
instructions and warning signs.
Lighting Europe’s concerns
LightingEurope is concerned about UVC disinfection devices available online, which come with claims that can’t be proved, inadequate safety features and poor safety instructions. LightingEurope also focuses on vital design processes, where all of the design elements are considered together instead of applying different measures in isolation. You’ll be glad to know that we already abide by all the necessary rules and standards.
We already have the solutions, and they’re already being used. The European lighting industry has been making high quality, safe UVC tech for many decades. The sector simply needs to realise its full potential, which will involve:
- Installing UVC disinfection technologies when designing safe indoor spaces
- Making sure finances are there to support the installation of UVC disinfection tech in the ‘Renovation Wave Initiative’ as well as in commercial and industrial settings
- Installing UVC disinfection technologies to support national renovation and climate change plans
- Ensuring the current rules are applied and enforced – which means non-compliant products should
not be sold online or anywhere else - Using UVC disinfecting tech to the manufacturers’ specifications
- Increasing inspection of consumer products
- Allocating enough resources to the authorities who enforce the rules
- Including UVC disinfection applications in building fit-out design
- Promoting UVC disinfection via health authorities
We’re on the case!
Our UVC disinfection machines are thoroughly tested, have all the safety features you need, and are proven to kill covid as well as numerous other viruses, bacteria, moulds and more. If you’d like to know more about the safety and effectiveness of our machines, we’ll be delighted to talk.
